How to increase your vehicle’s fuel efficiency

The easiest and most effective way to improve the fuel efficiency of any car is to modify your driving habits. Prioritising fuel-efficient driving can save you hundreds of dollars in fuel each year, improve road safety and prevent wear on your vehicle. Here are some easy ways you can change your car habits to ensure you have a fuel-efficient vehicle.

1) Remain steady when accelerating and braking
Let off the gas pedal gradually when driving. Accelerating and decelerating too quickly can stress your engine, which wastes fuel. Your car can reach its maximum speed with less effort if you accelerate and brake in a smooth, steady manner.

2) Avoid jack-rabbit starts
Jack-rabbit starts, or stopping suddenly and accelerating quickly, is a major cause of excess fuel consumption. If you need to stop suddenly, focus on slowing down gradually by taking off the gas and feathering the brake pedal until the vehicle slows to a safe speed.

3) Use cruise control
Cruise control allows you to let go of the gas when driving long distances, which allows your vehicle to reach its maximum speed with minimal effort. Using cruise control also helps eliminate unnecessary braking and accelerating that can waste fuel.

4) Pump up your tyres
Under-inflated tyres can increase fuel consumption by up to 3.3%. Make sure your vehicle’s tyres are properly inflated to the manufacturer’s recommended pressure, which is usually printed on the sidewall of the tyre.

5) Avoid getting stuck in traffic
Traffic can waste a great deal of fuel because most vehicles sit idle while stuck in traffic.
If you have to drive during peak traffic times, try taking an alternate route that has fewer cars and fewer stops.

6) Don’t carry unnecessary weight
Carrying unessential items in your car that you would likely get rid of if you had another vehicle can add up to extra pounds and unnecessary weight. Removing unnecessary items can increase fuel efficiency because your vehicle will be lighter and use less fuel when accelerating.

While there are other ways to make your car more fuel-efficient, like replacing worn-out parts and maintaining proper engine performance, prioritising good driving habits can get you the biggest savings.
